One Life? One Vision!

Do You Have a Vision of Your Life?

This article is inspired by a workshop I co-facilitated at a few years ago. The guy I was working with that day asked the group of people we were working with to think about and write down their vision.

Now this stumped the group for a while until eventually one person put his hand up and said this: “Excuse me, are you saying we should write our vision for our work life, or our vision for our real life?”

That question has always stuck in my mind, and it made me think of another question too. Why should there be a distinction between work life visions and real life visions?

A holistic life

You know, it’s not possible to live our life in compartments because everything we do affects everything else. Think about this for a moment – if you have an issue in your work life, this issue is going to affect your money, your relationships, your social life… it’s going to affect every part of your life.

So this is what I’m asking you to think about today – your one life, instead of just your work life.

You see, before we can start to think about what you want to do with your work life, I think it’s a really valuable exercise to stop and think about what you want to do with your life in general.

A long time at work

Do you realise we spend about 90,000 to 100,000 hours at work in our lifetime? Incredible, isn’t it? If that’s not a part of our real life I don’t know what is. I think sometimes the mistake we make is to think of our work life as something we do to help us live our real life.

However it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, I want to suggest to you that it won’t be this way from this point on.

Embark on your one life today

Today, I want you to start thinking about your life as one life. I want you to think about what you want to do with your one life. Before you start thinking about where you want to take your work life, I really want you to start thinking about where you want to take YOUR LIFE.

Here are some questions you can keep in mind as you do this. They’ll help enormously:

  • What do you want your life to be about?
  • What legacy do you want to leave when it’s time for you to leave this planet?
  • What do you want to have happened because you were here?
  • What dent in the world do you want to make?
  • What memorial should exist because you have been alive?
  • What do you want to become?
  • What do you want other people to say about your life?

Don’t forget, you can always let me know how you are getting on. It’s easy to connect with me at, where you can share your thoughts and feelings and progress. And remember – make today the day you embark on your one life!
